Mariano Taberner, owner of Bodegas Cueva, is something of a hero in Valencia wine circles, being a wine lover and member of the Club de Enófilos de Valencia who got off his backside and decided he was going to make wine. He and a team of like-minded friends set about making a wine that reflected their enthusiasm for the land and the task, all the while doing up a wonderful old bodega (have a look at the pictures on their website).

The wines are organic and lovingly tended – Mariano plays music to his wine in the same way that people speaking to their plants to enhance their growth. The cosmic effect is catching. When Piet tasted the Cueva Selección de Finca he pointed out that he could clearly see the moon on the label reflected in the brilliant red of the wine. The colour of the Cueva wines is spectacular, deep red with lighter violet hues.

The Club de Enófilos gave Bodegas Cueva a prize at its June 2009, not as a fellow member, but in recognition of the quality of these wines. This quality is reflected in the 90-plus points that Peñín and other leading guides have given the wine.

We raise our glasses to Mariano, Adela and the rest of his merry band.

One of our frequent visitors, Riki Wigley, has written a nice blog post about his visit to Bodegas Cueva. You can find the article here.
