Bodegas Xaló

Bodegas Xaló is a cooperative society formed approximately fifty five years ago, and started thanks to the efforts of a small group of farmers and wine producers that got together in the early sixties.

It was in fact at the beginning of the XX century, when the crisis that affected the raisin trade and the Phyloxera Plague that attacked the vines, caused a “Black Hole” in their agricultural evolution, that 14 farmers decided to form a Society, which is nowadays known as the “Bodega Cooperativa Virgen Pobre”. It was established in Jalón (Xalò) and now, after more than 45 years of existence it emerges as a real leader of the Viticulture of the region.
Nowadays there are four hundred partners who cultivate close to 400 hectares (989.400 acres).

Their high lands, over 400 m above sea level, are divided into small terraces (bancales) that have calcareous and stony soil such as Bernia, Cau, Planises, Maserof etc have together with the Giró variety, created excellent bases for the elaboration of their red wines.

Soils that contain more clay such as those in Alcalali, Pausulas, and Cutes are perfect for cultivating the grapes they use for their Malvarrosa wine.
The Lliber Valley (Pla de Lliber) with its deep and fertile soil is ideal for their dry but very fruity rose wines.
Besides using the Garnache grape they can be also very proud of their Muscatel variety.
Other grape varieties are Tempranillo, Merlot, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The Cooperative is in Jalon (Xaló), on the outskirts of the village on the road to Alcalali. The winery is less than thirty minutes from the main tourist towns of Denia, Javea (Xabia) and Calpe; and 6 Kilometers from the N332 and AP7 as they pass through Benissa.
