This bodega in the highlands near Muro de Alcoi embodies a whole philosophy of wine and of living. They do not have their own vineyards, but are committed to obtaining grapes from local “microvineyards” that they supervise. This is in the belief that the Mediterranean ecosystem and culture requires the retention and encouragement of agricultural smallholdings (“minifundio”).

They also believe, and demonstrate, how this can lead to products of great quality, both in their wines (the white Albir and reds Almoroig and the new Celler la Muntanya) and fabulous olive oil. This is genuinely regional, indeed Alicante, product as far removed from branded supermarket wine as you can get.

The bodega has not yet been formally integrated in DO Alicante, so the labels say “Vino de Mesa”, but this is a bureaucratic reality that bears no relationship to the splendour of the wine in the bottles.
