This is another new and happening bodega set up by Julián López alongside his wife, María José Peidro, with their daughter, also María José, very much on board and with us at the Vino Valencia event.

This bodega, as with Los Frailes last month, is a genuine “Pago” that only makes wines from its own vineyards, comprising eleven different varieties, surrounding the bodega. It is well worth a visit, and if you are lucky you will have Don Julián himself take you around, which is what he devotes most weekends to.

The bodega works with renowned French winemaking consultant Michel Poudou and with the impressive Francesc (“Cesco”) Girón as in-house winemaker.

As well as the Las Ocho we had at the November 2009 event, the bodega makes the white Las Tres (Chardonnay, Macabeo, Sauvignon Blanc), the rosado Las Cuatro (Tempranillo, Garnacha, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah), whose names need no further explanation.

an imageIn addition to the other highly worthwhile wines made by Chozas Carrascal, special mention should be made of the bodega’s two sweet wines. The first is a Muscat vin doux naturel, Domaine de Montahuc, made with M. Poudou in St Jean de Minervois in France, whose elegant richness I like a lot. The second is a sweet red, El Dulce, made with Garnacha.
Both of these are just right to round off your Christmas meal.
