Romeral Vinícola has been a standard-bearer of modernity in Utiel-Requena since it was established in the early 90s, not just in terms of winemaking, but also in its commercial and technical relationships with winegrowers.
This commitment is further reflected in the bodega’s Ardilla range, for which they donate 2% of sales revenue to an Ibérica 2000 project to reintroduce the red squirrel to Spain.
Apart from the Ardilla wines, the bodega produces the Castillo de Requena range – I’m a particular fan of their Bobal rosado. The bodega carefully sources grapes from local growers to produce honest to goodness wines that let the grapes express themselves while remaining distinctively from Utiel-Requena.
Their success in this task is shown by the awards the wines have accumulated. Apart from its other triumphs, the Ardilla Shiraz 2008 was voted by Valencia’s Els Bodeguers as the best young red in 2009, the Ardilla Merlot was awarded a gold medal at Spain’s prestigious Zarcillo competition in 2009, the Ardilla Cabernet Sauvignon won a gold medal at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles of 2007 to go with the silvers awarded the same year to the Garnacha and the Merlot, and the list goes on.
They are not available in retail outlets in Valencia, but contact Vino Valencia for details of how to purchase a minimum of 6 bottles (mixed case if preferred).
