Vins del Comtat makes its wines in a warehouse in an industrial estate L’Alcúdia, but it is well worth a visit, as you will see the enthusiasm and attention to detail lavished on every aspect of the winemaking process, and if you’re lucky you’ll have the chance to see the vineyards from which they get their grapes, surrounded by the high peaks that give the wines their names.
The founder of the bodega, Ovidio Carbonell, spent many years selling wine-making equipment around the world, nurturing a dream of making his own wine back home one day. As with neighbouring Celler La Muntanya, who participated in the September 2009 event, Vins del Comtat are conscious of restoring a winemaking heritage that had all but disappeared in this beautiful mountainous part of Alicante.
Ovidio’s son David runs things with winemaker Eva Navarro and their team. Naturally, given Ovidio’s background, the equipment is state of the art. The resulting wines are spectacular, but, interestingly, are almost more celebrated abroad than at home (Parker is a fan).
The reds – Serrella, Peña Cadiella, Peña Cadiella Selecció and their outstanding top of the range Montcabrer – are full of warmth, but also structure and intensity. The Moscatels – Verdeval, Verdeval Especial and the wonderful sweet Cristal.lí – are all freshness and aromas.
