Almoroig 2006

QR Code what’s this?

Name wine: Almoroig – 2006

Type: oak aged red wine

Winery: Celler la Muntanya, Muro, Alicante

AVIN: 2567362349379

Used on event: First Vino Valencia event at Ginger Loft, September 16, 2009

This bodega is committed to recovering a wine tradition that had disappeared until recently from the mountainous interior of this area of Alicante.

In consequence, the wine uses three classic grape varieties of the region: 69% Monastrell (known internationally as Mourvèdre), 23% Giró (Garnacha) and 8% Garnacha Tintorera. The hot climate and the 8% Garnacha Tintorera famous for its intense colour (one of the only grapes to have coloured flesh) contribute to the rich red hues of this powerful yet accessible wine, with plenty of spice.

The 2005 vintage receive a 90-point rating from “The Wine Advocate” and 91 from “The International Wine Cellar”, so its reputation is spreading internationally. This is a real discovery that will surprise and impress in any company.

Vino Valencia Tasting Notes

Appearance: Deep ruby red, slightly paler at the rim of the glass.
Nose: Potent, cedar, tobacco, leather (JM), with hint of peach (DB).
Palate: Big tannins and assertive alcohol. Dark berries and chocolate. Initially perhaps short on finesse, but 30 minutes after opening was noticeably softer and rounder.
GL food thoughts: Needs some sturdy food and sauce – Mexican mole (savoury chocolate-based sauce), maybe venison.

  • Javier says:

Appearance: the light and dark red cherry
Nose: very expressive nose, with fruity especially red fruit and some toasty
Palate: Flavor good attack, very strong, with an expressive tannin and some mineral or earthy, a wine to leave a couple of years in bottle.
