The Ardilla range of monovarietal wines aims at offering excellent value and a clear expression of the individual varieties (they have a Merlot, a Bobal, a Cabernet Sauvignon, a Garnacha).

They are reaping the rewards. This year the Ardilla Shiraz (this grape is also called Syrah) has won a silver medal at the “Syrah du monde” competition and a silver medal at Spain’s “Zarcillo 2009”.

But this is not a pretentious wine. Rather, it aims to emphasize fruit while expressing the landscape, and in reflection of this 2% of the income derived from sales of the Ardilla (which means squirrel) range is devoted to the reintroduction of the red squirrel in Spain. And all this for around 3 euros (plus VAT).

Vino Valencia Tasting Notes

We were torn between the Ardilla Merlot and the Ardilla Shiraz, but eventually opted for this wine, with the grape’s bigger flavours.
Appearance: The characteristic brilliant deep red of red wines from the region.
Nose: Fruit compôte, with a hint of earthiness, someone mentioned mushrooms.
Palate: an attractive jammy fruitiness, followed by a subtle pepperiness (Tsatsiki, said DB), with a hint of chocolate in the aftertaste, all coming in at 13% alcohol.
Ginger Loft food thoughts: We will have to wait for details, but they were looking for something unfussy to match the frankness of the wine.
