Name wine: Cueva Selección Barrica Selección 2006

Type: red wine

Winery: Bodegas Cueva, D.O. Utiel-Requena

AVIN: 6063021409904

Used on event: 2nd Vino Valencia Wine Event at Ginger Loft, October 21, 2009

This is a new wine from Bodegas Cueva that is just about to reach the shops, to add to their excellent “Selección de Finca” – both wines are organic and made from Garnacha, Tempranillo and Bobal.

As the name suggests it spends some time maturing in oak, but the bodega is careful not to overdo this at the expense of the fruit (“madurado” as a term is in increasing use to convey that a wine is not a “vino joven” that has spent no time in oak barriques, but neither does it spend as long in cask as crianzas, reservas and gran reservas).

The wine has been given an outstanding rating by the Peñín Guide. The winemaker, who is a little bit cosmic as you can see from the label, plays oriental music to his wines. Your taste buds will be singing along.

Vino Valencia Tasting Notes

Confession time. The Cueva “Madurado en barrica” is so hot off the press that we couldn’t get any to taste before the event. We tried the bodega’s “Selección de finca” to give us an idea, as the same grapes – Tempranillo, Bobal and Garnacha – are used.
Appearance & Nose: If the “Madurado” emulates the intensely brilliant colour and depth of aromas and flavour (leather, cigars, black pepper, red berries, liquorice) of the “Selección” we are in for a treat.
Palate: The wine had an initial hint of sweetness, followed by powerful flavours with the liquorice again in evidence, with a long finish during which the wine’s structured acidity reasserted itself. We are looking forward to meeting Selección de Finca’s sibling, “Madurado en barrica”.
GL food thoughts: Immediate The Ginger Loft food thoughts – steamed and stuffed Chinese bun, reflecting the spiciness and refreshing substance of the wine.
