Sanfir 2004

QR Code what’s this?

Name wine: Sanfir – 2004

Type: oak aged red wine

Winery: Casa del Pinar, D.O. Utiel-Requena

AVIN: 4408512378802

Used on event: First Vino Valencia event at Ginger Loft, September 16, 2009

One of the first things to note about this wine is that it is a blend of five different grape varieties: Bobal, Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. This is no easy undertaking – each variety has its different moment of ripeness and own wine-making challenges. The grapes are hand-picked, carefully crushed and macerated and aged separately in oak barrels for about fourteen months, before spending a further year in bottle prior to release.

All this is done in a fairly new, small bodega, and the result is a wine of real smoothness and class, genuinely international in style, though the presence of Utiel-Requena’s own Bobal also gives it a specifically local touch.

This is the 2004 vintage, so we are also seeing how the wine retains a good presence of fruit after five years, alongside its mature sophistication. As the owner of the bodega said with English understatement, “I think that the 2004 is drinking well now”.

Vino Valencia Tasting Notes

Appearance: Deeply brilliant red.
Nose: Ripe berries, unidentified floral touch (violets?), brie (DB), sandalwood, cinnamon.
Palate: An initial touch of sweetness in the mouth, followed by balanced acidity with gentle tannins and an overall sense of elegance.
GL food thoughts: Let the wine express itself with grilled vegetables, serve before Almoroig.
