The Trilogía is made from three grape varieties (70% Monastrell, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Tempranillo), unlike the bodega’s Bilogía, which is made from two. The bodega’s great passion is for its Monastrell vines, which are at the heart of its red.
Like the Cueva this month, and the Reposo last month, Los Frailes produces organic wines. Miguel Velázquez once said to me that the values of organic agriculture could be summed up in what has happened to the flavourless tomato of today. This wine is full of flavour and richness – all the way from tobacco and spices to strawberry yogurt in our tasting notes – and authenticity, as well as heaps of winemaking skill and commitment.
This wine wins prizes and gets very high ratings in the guides, but this wine is made with a view to expressing a landscape and a way of getting the best out of it now and for the future.
Vino Valencia Tasting Notes
Appearance: As so often with wines from this corner of the Mediterranean, the exceptional depth and intensity of colour is what first strikes you, though we can all too often take it for granted until we come across wines from places where the grapes struggle to achieve similar levels of ripeness.
Nose: With the Trilogía the nose also sent out an array of different messages. There was an initial sweetness (described as “candy” by TGL, but which others defined as fruit yogurt (JM) swiftly followed by rich scents of tobacco and cedar wood, and something earthy and reminiscent of clean hay (PB).
Palate: The wine hit the tongue with a noticeable initial freshness, before rounding out to confirm the flavours hinted at in the nose.
GL food thoughts: The Ginger Loft immediate food thought was that this rich wine could stand up to a stiff food challenge and would go well with food that might be too much for other wines. Spicy Moroccan meatballs were mentioned.
